Glum

Smiles are prisoners in you

So many enter your eyes

So few ever see the light again

Surely they tire

Of staring through the bars

Knowing, as they do,

What it was like to travel

From face to face

Every now and then

You drop your guard

And you grant a poor soul liberty

Evening

All the stars are shooting

The sky is lines of light

Darkness is replacing

The twinkles in the night

The moon is oh so lonely

The stars have leap away

It will be one and only

Til the sun comes out to play

When Writing a Book

There is no way around it

The only way to get anywhere

Is to sit in the chair and go nowhere

To travel through page after page

World after world without moving

Enraptured

Enraptured in the soul of souls

Of which each of us is part

Complete in the whole of wholes

Which is one with all that art

Connected to the thread of light

That runs through this moral frame

That shines on both wrong and right

And values king and beggar the same

Profound in nature yet undefined

Still in the source of sound

It lends its shape to states of mind

Thus is nowhere yet all around

Interference

I broke those that I tried to repair

Not knowing that they were fine as they were

That it wasn’t up to me to change them

My dreams were never theirs

They had their own

The best thing I could have done

Was to let them live as they wished to

To have my say then be silent

To honor their choices

And be happy when they were

The Bath

The bath has turned cold

The taps coughs out ice blocks

Good for soaking nothing

If I was a six pack or tub of ice cream

It would be fine

If I wanted to be frozen for millennia

And wake up an artifact

I wouldn’t mind

As things are

I want the bath to melt me to liquid

To boil me to vapor

So that I can escape through a window

And rise to the sun

I Left You

I left you as certain stars leave the sky

Only to return on the darkest of nights

Because there was love there

I left you as a tear leaves the eye

Diminishing as it sheds a trail

Because there was love there

I left you my earth, my gravity

Because there was love there

And I was afraid of falling

Temptation

It was I who bit the snake and poisoned it

I who led Jesus to the whorehouse, under my arm,

And he who backed away

I laughed at him as I went in

I told him what he was missing

Told him it was cheap

Oh no, he said, the price is me

Now I sit beneath the tree

With the twice bitten apple

And wonder how things might have been

Had I acted otherwise

Nervous

The nerves are working,

Producing endorphins

The senses are heightened

Until they touch the sky’s ceiling

And bend back in again

Until nerve endings hang like jungle vines

Someone more experienced could swing from them and go far

How good they are at beating their chests

And picking ant holes clean

They know the jungle

And what to do when it rains

They have evolved to it

They have labored to become natural

Whereas I am still learning to walk hunched over

To stay calm when ticks are bitten from my fir

Bloodsuckers that they are

To climb the high trees without a tremble
